How I take my photos

If there are any of you out there wandering how to create a cheap photo studio, this is how I do it:

On the left hand side I use two adjustable desk lamps with 100W incandescent bulbs. One doesn't seem to give enough light for me. I guess I could use one higher wattage light, but this is what I had on hand.

In front of the lamps I put a screen that diffuses the light (this is very important!!). I use a previously unused silk-screen, but you could also tape some translucent paper to an old frame or to the lamp itself (just be careful the lamp doesn't get to hot!)

On the right hand side I use a large white sketch pad to reflect the light into the areas that would otherwise have a dark shadow. A better alternative would be a large piece of foam-core, but the pad seems to work fine.

Lastly, to create a seamless background I use a long piece of white paper (I actually used some tracing paper that was sitting around, but plain white paper would be much better!). Just attach the paper to the wall and let it drape down all the way to the front of the table creating a smooth curve.

It's that simple!

I am working on getting together a jewelry order for The IKSV Design Shop and my own Etsy Store. This is a pre-firing image of some of the ceramic pieces I finished this weekend. If you know my work you will recognize the white, grey and black pieces from my Bone line that will soon become earrings and necklaces. The not so recognizable pieces on the right are part of my new line! They will fire to a beautiful dark chocolatey brown. Stay tuned for the finished work!

I am working on a new jewelry line which I first began during my residency at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. I had put the project on hold while I was getting used to my new life here in Barcelona, but I decided it was time to bring this project back to the front burner. I hope to have some actual pieces from this new line for sale in my online store by November!

These are some initial pieces, but I am still playing with a bunch of different ideas.

Today was my first full day back in my Barcelona studio. I am working on expanding the visual vocabulary of my Off Circle vessels. I have been experimenting with fully hand-building them, instead of throwing the pots on the wheel and then altering them. I think with this change in method I am able to create pieces that have a stronger organic feel. Each new piece seems to be getting closer to the image I have in my head.

It's great to be back!

Back in Istanbul

We are in Istanbul for a month and I am back at work in my old studio. The weather has been so nice here that I dragged my table out to work in the garden.

I bought some terracotta clay from a potter near our house. I am now learning how to work with this new clay. I can't wait to see how it fires.

Today was my first full work day at the studio.
This morning, I received a shipment of different clays that I want to try out. After several months it is nice to touch clay again. But I have to admit it's hard to get back in to the rhythm of creating.
My first project is a new jewelry line. The last photo shows a couple of prototypes I was working on today.

Slowly Discovering Barcelona

Two months have passed since my last day at the Museum of Arts and Design, but I have only had a week to sit back and reflect on my time there. During the past two months I packed up my life in New York and transported it to Barcelona, Spain. Leaving a city so full of life was difficult, but I can't wait to be influenced by my new home.

During my residency at MAD I used Central Park as my inspiration for a new line of jewelry. I collected a variety of leaves, twigs, buds and seeds from the Park. Each piece of jewelry was inspired by a specific natural element. For instance, I based a brooch on the dried veins of a leaf, a pair of earrings on the frayed edge of a blade of grass, and a necklace on the linear form of a twig.

In Barcelona, I want to continue the creative exploration that I began in New York. I have already started to collect visual snapshots from around the city. Having grown up along the Mediterranean, I'm thrilled to be reunited with the sea and sun again. I spend a lot of time on the cold winter beach, recording images of water and sand. I have also been staring out over roof tops, photographing the city 6 stories above the ground.

Three weeks ago I landed in beautiful Barcelona. After a couple weeks of disorientation, I am now slowly getting a feel for the city. Having closed the New York chapter of our life only a month ago, it is exciting to be creating a whole new life here in Spain. We are still waiting for our furniture and my studio equipment to arrive. But, we already found a new resting spot for my Off Circle bowls and a light filled studio for me to work in!!

A New Take on The Off-Circle Vessel

I am working on a new project!

I have been wanting to widen the lips of my Off Circle vessels. After a few unsuccessful trials of trying to construct these wide lipped bowls with the same method I had previously used, I decided to rethink my concept and technique. I realized that I wanted to create pieces that gave the sense of weight and heft, but in actuality were very light. Producing my Off Circle vessel as a double-walled form was the conclusion that I came to. Creating a vessel with double walls will give me the heavy look and light feel that I am going for. It will also solve my problem with constructing a wide lip. Hopefully...

Above are some images of the interior and exterior walls that I carved. I will create molds from these clay volumes, into which I will press thin slabs of clay.

Finishing The Bowl

...I continued carving the plaster. Once I achieved the shape that I had envisioned, I began to prep it for mold making. First, I applied three layers of a mixture of shellac and denatured alcohol. Secondly, I found the center line where the mold would come apart. Then finally, I built a clay wall up to this center line. After these steps I poured the plaster in two stages and created my beautiful mold!

After waiting a few days for the plaster mold to dry, I cast a bowl from it. Unfortunately, I was unhappy with the shape and volume of the resulting bowl. It lacked the flowing curves and delicate edges I was hoping to achieve.

It is now time to go back to the drawing board!

Beginning of a New Bowl

I have just begun working on a new line of slipcast forms. I thought it would be fun to document my design process from beginning to end. Above are images of where I have gotten so far.

First, I begin by sketching out my ideas. I make drawings on paper, as well as construct small clay models. When I have a general idea of the shape that I want, I pour a block of plaster. I make sure that this block has equivalent volume to the vessel that I have in mind . Once the plaster has set, I begin to carve it down. This part of the process always takes a long time. It is very labor intensive, but it is also the most exciting. Although I have a general idea of the bowl that I want to create, I allow myself the freedom to work from instinct. The outcome is always a bit of a surprise.

Taking Photos

I have spent the day photographing work for my Etsy store. Here are a few shots of my makeshift photo studio. It is a very cheap setup, but it works for me. If you are interested in creating a similar lightbox all you need is a large cardboard box, a piece of thick white paper (or whatever color you would like for the background), vellum and a 100W incandesecent bulb.

Cut off the top flaps of the box and tape together the bottom ones. Turn the box, so that the top opening is facing you. Cut out the right, left and top of the box, leaving an edge along the sides to attach the vellum (translucent paper). Cut the vellum to fit over the openings and attach with glue, tape or whatever. Cut the thick white paper (or any other color you would prefer) to fit the interior dimensions of the box. Attach the edge of the paper to the top back of the interior of the box. Let the paper flow foward, this will give you a smooth transition between back and bottom. You can shine your 100W bulb through the right, left or top vellum window.

If your object is too big to fit in the lightbox you can take pictures directly on a table top. Make sure the table is similar in color to the wall. My table and wall are both white, but if you'd like you can use a large piece of thick paper that can be drapped like in the lightbox. Hang a piece of vellum infront of your bulb to soften the light. Now you have a simple photo studio all of your own!!

I was in London over the new year visiting my sister. I walked by a few galleries with very inspirational work. Above are some images that I wanted to share with you. The first image is of work by Anne Kyyrö Quinn, who creates amazing surface treatments with colored felt. Unfortunately I don't know the artist who created the beautiful porcelain and glass light fixtures, but it is worth researching. The last image is of "The Wheel", a shop where Sotis Filippides sells his own gorgeous ceramics. It is worth a visit to this store just to see his textured black glaze.

These photos from my studio are of bowls that I am currently working on. I always post pictures of finished pieces, so I thought it would be fun to post some that show work in progress. I usually work with porcelain, however I am trying to branch out into other clay bodies. I have begun testing my forms in terracotta. I will be trying out different surface options, including terra sigillata, which is a very smooth coating of clay that almost resembles glaze.

Watershed

I recently returned from an amazing residency at Watershed in Newcastle, Maine. Although the focus was mainly on the medium of clay, our session consisted of a group of ceramic artists, sculptors and photographers. We worked late hours, ate deliciously prepared meals and drank blueberry flavored beer. I also got to cast some plaster molds and produce my usually porcelain Off-Circle bowls in stoneware.

Thanks to the staff at Watershed for making the residency a success, and thanks to Ed for sponsoring my time there.

Haystack

I spent an amazing two weeks at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on Deer Isle in Maine studying mold making with Benjamin Schulman. Experimenting with rubber and plaster molds I had the opportunity to cast with clay, resin and chocolate. I have come to realize that mold making is an art of its own. The process is much more time intensive than I had envisioned, however the possibilities that molds provide make it all worth it. I see a lot of potential for integrating molds into my work. Who knows this might be the beginning of a whole new journey...

During these two weeks I have also fallen in love with polaroids. Somehow they are able to capture the essence of a moment better than any other picture.

This announcement is coming about a month too late, but I wanted to post it none the less since it is a big accomplishment for me. My piece, Off Circle, was in The Clay Studio Member's Exhibition. The show was juried by Steve Lee, Director of the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, MT. I was very excited to have my piece exhibited among so many other talented artists' work.

My great friend Colleen (who is also an amazing metals artist) and I are teaching a class at University City Arts League. The class combines metal working with clay, thus the name "Mixing Media". We will be making mobiles in this four week class. The posted photos are from our first class.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by my booth at Art Star Craft Bazaar. The show started with thunder and rain on Saturday, but by Sunday the sun was out. There was a huge turn out both by the visitors and the vendors. Congrats to Erin and Megan for a great fair.

Earrings

I have added a new component to my Bone Series: earrings! The thin porcelain circles make these earrings light in weight. The earwires, which are sterling silver, attach to the clay circles with a simple loop in the back. I have oxidized the earwires to create a dark finish that contrasts with the pure white of the raw porcelain.

Holiday Workshop

I have been working on this series since May. I created it for the Art Star Craft Bazaar as a line of jewelry that would complement my bowl forms. The pendants are all made individually from porcelain. Their surface is unglazed bare clay, which for me has a sensual tactility.

These are my second batch of porcelain vessels. They are thrown on the wheel, then crudely shaped by hand while still wet, and lastly carved at a stage when the clay is between leather hard and bone dry (yani bayagi sert haldeyken). I have been working with the clear, tenmoku, black and spodumene school glazes. Each firing produces different results, which is exciting and frustrating at the same time. I plan to experiement with color later on. However, right now I enjoy the simplicity of the monotone glazes. Let me know what you think. Optum!
